King Camel - Reel 1 & 2 not spinning

I might have bid on that King Camel on ebay that finished today…


The errors reset easy, and the coin hopper issue was fixed by connecting and disconnecting after a few resets.

All three top reels spin.

Main issue is that main reels 1 & 2 don’t spin. Disconnected and reconnected every connector I could see. I also swapped 2 & 3. 3 still spun so something is happening on the board I guess.

Any clues except ‘clean everything and try again’ ?

I had another play this morning.

All motors spin free when machine is turned off.
All board connections scrubbed with a toothbrush with a tiny bit of alcohol on it and given a wiggle while in-play.

Reel one wants to spin, you can see it pulse, and a 'tick tick tick' sound where the motor tries to turn.
Reel two buzzes. It has that hum like an electrical buzz.

With that in mind it must be some kind of bad connection or resistance stopping the spin.

Maybe too much dust in the motors that the board can't produce enough electric, but this wouldn't make sense as one reel still spins....

Thanks for the how-to.

I removed the reels, and removed the two smaller pcb’s. The traces were filthy. Once cleaned they look like a few are borked.

Once cleaned and put back together the machine now won’t spin or register button presses. I guess I cleaned away what little trace was holding a few of the logics together.

May be a spares/repairs for sale for someone then, as my money is on it needing both boards to work.

Yep I think it’ll be too much work for me to repair all the traces and sort it out. Going to give first dibs to a local retro game shop to use as window-candy.

Local shop didn’t want it as a window display, and ebay buyers were messing about.

Decided to try and repair all the broken traces. I now have Reel 1 & 3 working but 2 is still locked up. As far as I can see, all the broken traces are repaired but it’s still failing to spin 2.

Errors reset, game plays, top + 1&3 spin. 2 is locked up.

Swapping the wires to 2&3, 3 would lock up.

I’m wondering the likelihood I’ve missed a bad trace, but everything else seems to beep on the multimeter. Not sure where to go with this now.

When you swapped the wires 2 to 3 and 3 locked up then..did #2 reel spin after doing that ? Can you post pictures of those connections ?

Reel 2 spun when connected to Reel 3’s connector.

Machine’s now gone to someone else who has decided to take on the challenge.
